WASHINGTON, DC – Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, appeared this weekend on “American Voices with Alicia Menendez” on MSNBC to discuss the upcoming end to the Title 42 policy, a failed Trump-era immigration rule enacted in the early days of the pandemic to immediately expel migrants at the border under a public health emergency.

“Title 42 should never have been implemented to begin with, many public health officials have decried Title 42. It is a public health policy co-opted for border purposes by the Trump administration to keep people fleeing violence, persecution, and instability out of the country. Now that it’s about to be lifted, children and families will be able to have their fair day in our immigration courts…. Title 42 has been a monstrous policy that has resulted in widespread suffering by these refugees,” saidGonzales. “In this time of giving, empathy, and humanity as we enter the holiday season, this is the time for Title 42 to come down. We can not address rising migration at our border through enforcement policies by building walls and separating families.”

The end of Title 42 comes on the heels of Congress’ failure to negotiate a bipartisan immigration deal during the lame duck session. Instead of working with Democrats on a deal that would make investments in border security and protect Dreamers, Republicans showed that they are more interested in scoring political points than in delivering solutions. For all the mania and “concerns” over border security, here they had an opportunity to work with Democrats to broker a lopsided deal that would have tremendously increased investments in border security – up to $40 billion – and they just walked away.

The Immigration Hub stands firmly with United We Dream, the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers and their families, and countless immigrant rights advocates who will not rest until Congress delivers on its promise to protect immigrant youth and families.
