Coalition of Bipartisan U.S. Mayors, DACA Recipient to Host Press Call Urging Congress to Enact Permanent Protections for Dreamers

Mayors Brainard (R-IN) of Carmel and Schember of Erie (D-PA), Along With DACA Recipient and NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Say: “It’s Now or Never for Dreamers. Congress Must Act.”

WASHINGTON, DC - On Wednesday, December 7th, Cities for Action, the New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and a bipartisan group of U.S. Mayors will join a DACA recipient to call upon Congress to enact permanent protections for Dreamers during the lame duck session. It’s imperative that leaders of both parties come together on a deal during this crucial time.

DACA is an immensely popular program in the U.S., with a strong majority of voters (65%) saying that Congress should act to protect Dreamers if a federal court overturns the DACA program, along with 78% of Latino voters. The end of DACA will have dire and insurmountable ripple effects across communities and local economies. An average of 1,000 Dreamers will lose their jobs each week — in labor market sectors already experiencing shortages, such as healthcare, education, service industries, food production and more.

This press call comes a week after Mayors Brainard and Schember joined over 70 mayors from across the country to release a public letter calling on the U.S. Senate to strike a bipartisan deal to pass protections for Dreamers before the end of this year.
