Immigration Hub Applauds the Biden Administration’s Decision to Extend TPS Designation

Biden Administration Extends TPS to El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan, Benefitting Hundreds of Thousands of Hard-working Immigrants

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, the Biden administration announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for six countries, including El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan. Extended to June 30, 2024, the program will allow nearly 400,000 immigrants of these six nationalities to continue to remain and work in the United States.

In response to the announcement, Kerri Talbot, Deputy Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“This extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will protect hundreds of thousands of individuals who are unable to return to nations beset by violence and instability. In taking this action, the Biden administration did the right thing. The decision, however, does not expand the TPS designation to those who arrived in America after earlier cut-off dates, and these individuals are similarly situated and deserving of protection.

“Ultimately, the solution is for Congress to act by creating pathways to permanent status and citizenship – for TPS beneficiaries and their families, for Dreamers, for farm workers, and more. The people protected by this decision, for example, are deeply rooted in American communities and make huge contributions to the American economy. The American people want their leaders to work together to fashion immigration reforms that formally recognize undocumented and temporarily protected immigrants as the Americans they already are.”
