Immigration Hub Applauds the Biden-Harris Administration Move to Designate TPS to Ethiopia

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the designation of Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, providing stability to over 27,000 people in response to an increasingly worsening humanitarian crisis taking place in Ethiopia brought on by a combination of armed conflict, climate shocks, disease outbreaks and the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19. In response, Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“We applaud the Biden administration, in particular DHS Secretary Mayorkas, for designating Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which will provide safety and security to thousands of Ethiopians in the United States. TPS exists to ensure the nationals of a country in crisis are provided safe harbor and given Ethiopia finds itself in an escalating, precarious and dangerous situation that merits protection now— the designation of TPS for Ethiopia will save lives.

“Ethiopians are integral members of communities all across the United State and providing Temporary Protected Status ensures that these vital members of our society are not deported back to an on-going civil war and a drought that has put 25.9 million people— more than one-fifth of Ethiopia’s population— in need of life-saving humanitarian support to prevent starvation and death.

“We commend the Biden administration today and call for swift implementation of these protections for Ethiopians. With overwhelming public support for TPS for families who are already in the U.S, we also urge the administration to continue using its authority as Congress intended to redesignate and extend Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and designate Mali, Mauritania, Guatemala for TPS because violence, political insecurity and climate change have created conditions that warrant it.”
