New Poll: Majority of Michigan Voters Disapprove of Trump on Job Performance, Immigration and Racist Attacks

Heading into the Second Democratic Debate in Detroit, Critical Michigan Voting Blocs Reject Trump’s Politics of Cruelty and Bigotry

MICHIGAN - As Democratic candidates prepare to debate tonight in Detroit, new polling shows that the majority of Michigan voters, including critical voting blocs of women and Independents, disapprove of President Trump’s handling of immigration, his policies on the issue, and racist rhetoric.

A new survey of Michigan voters, by Change Research and the Immigration Hub, found that voters in the state reflect national and battleground trends:the majority (54%) of voters disapprove of Trump’s job as president, including 64% of Michigan women and 54% of Independents. The president’s disapproval ratings on immigration and his recent racist attacks against four members of Congress also continue to demonstrate his waning support with battleground voters, particularly women.

“Voters in Michigan, including the women that Trump needs to win the state, soundly reject his racist and cruel policies,” stated Tyler Moran, Director of the Immigration Hub. “As Democratic candidates make their case in Detroit over the next two days, they should continue to lay out values-based solutions to the immigration system that contrast with Trump's attacks that are intended to divide the electorate.”

The survey results are consistent with an earlier Immigration Hub national poll, conducted in June, that found that President Trump is vulnerable on immigration and voters in twelve swing states resoundingly reject his immigration policies. As Trump’s contentious rhetoric and attacks against immigrants ramp up, Michigan voters, particularly women, are turning away from him.

The poll conducted between July 25 to July 29 found:

54% of Michigan voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of his job as president, including

  • 59% of white women (51% of white women - non college)

  • 66% of women

  • 65% of white women (57% of white women - non college)

  • 59% of Independents (71% of Independent women)

About the survey: Polling was conducted online from July 25th through July 28th, 2019. Using its Bias Correct Engine to attain a sample reflective of potential 2020 voters, Change Research polled 929 registered voters in Michigan who say the chances they will vote next year are 50-50 or higher.

All polls are subject to errors caused by interviewing a sample of persons, rather than the entire population. In 95 cases out of 100, the responses to this survey should be within plus or minus 3.6 percentage points of those that would have been obtained from interviewing the entire population of likely voters. The sampling error for subgroups of the survey will be greater.
