The Administration Must Listen to the Will of Their Party, The Electorate, and Uphold Humanitarian Protections for TPS Holders from Central America

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Representatives Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), and 84 other Members of Congress called on President Biden and U.S. Department of State Secretary Blinken to provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations for 1.5 million migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Lia Parada, Director of Legislative Advocacy at the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“The worsening humanitarian crisis in the Northern Triangle of Central America qualifies these nations for long-overdue protections. The 2020 hurricanes devastated and displaced countless communities and the COVID-19 pandemic has made matters worse, exacerbating an already tenuous situation. We applaud the members of Congress who are calling on the administration to extend and designate TPS to these nationals who not only call America home, but should not be deported to such dangerous regions. There’s no question the conditions of these countries meet the criteria for TPS designation.

“TPS holders have become integral members of American society and our critical U.S. workforce. The Biden-Harris Administration has an opportunity to provide protections for undocumented immigrants who are part of our essential workforce and should be on a pathway to citizenship. Turning our back on them would betray our values and commitment to a fair and humane immigration system, and go against the will of the American people. President Biden and Secretary Blinken must listen to their party and the will of the electorate, and ensure TPS holders have an opportunity to continue thriving alongside their fellow American workers and neighbors.”
