286 Groups Demand Congress Reject Poison Pill Anti-Immigrant Amendments, Deliver For Families Through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, as reported by Punchbowl, a coalition of 286 organizations, representing many constituencies, urged Senators to vote NO on poison pill, anti-immigrant amendments to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The letter asks Senators to focus on delivering relief to working Americans rather than helping advance the GOP’s extreme anti-immigrant agenda that would end asylum indefinitely, attack immigrant communities, and “sink” Democrats’ plan to lower costs for families and fight climate change.
In the following days, Congress is slated to pass the FY 2022 budget reconciliation bill, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The bill will be subject to a vote-a-rama, a process during which Senators can submit a slew of amendments. Just as they have done in the past, Republicans in the Senate are expected to introduce numerous amendments that target immigrant communities to distract Americans, score political points and derail the passage of this critical legislation. The groups are calling on Democrats to firmly stand together and vote down all poison pill amendments that block families from seeking refuge and harm immigrant communities who are an integral part of our economic recovery.
The groups specifically urge Senators to oppose anti-immigrant amendments that attempt to do the following:
-
End Asylum at the Border
-
Harm Immigrants’ Health, Economic Well-Being, or Education
-
Further Bloat Enforcement or Militarize the Border
The letter can be read in its entirety here.
