Immigration Hub Commends Biden for Issuing TPS for Sudan and South Sudan, Calls for Broadest Use of TPS Protection

“Humanitarianism Doesn’t Become A Value Until We Act On It”

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Biden administration announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan, and as well as a new designation of TPS for Sudan.

“The Biden administration is using Temporary Protected Status exactly as Congress intended: to save lives,” said Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub. “We applaud this protection for people from Sudan and South Sudan and urge the administration to use its authority in the broadest way possible to designate additional countries for protection.”

“TPS is a safety valve, a commitment that we will not deport people to countries where their lives are in danger. Sadly, a combination of authoritarianism, terrorism, and climate disasters today makes safe return to countries like Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Mali, Mauritania, and other nations impossible. The United States government must extend TPS to nationals of these and other countries, immediately. Humanitarianism is recognizing the human dignity of all people. But it doesn’t become a value until we act on it,” added Gonzales. “The Biden administration should exercise tools like TPS every time it is needed to save lives.”

Last week, the Immigration Hub along with twenty-five advocacy organizations released key immigration policy priorities for the Biden-Harris administration, 2022 Immigration Priorities: A Blueprint for the Biden-Harris Administration, detailing actions that the president should take this year to fulfill his campaign promises and build a modern and fair immigration system. The report includes additional humanitarian actions the Biden administration must take, including extending TPS to a broader list of nations. For more information, click here.
