Biden’s Move to Extend TPS is Welcomed, But More Must Be Done

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced it will extend Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelan holders but will not redesignate TPS. 323,000 Venezuelans are currently eligible for TPS, but redesignation would have allowed an additional 250,000 Venezuelans who have fled the Maduro regime after the initial March 2021 designation to apply for TPS. Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of The Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“While the administration’s decision to extend TPS for Venezuela is welcomed and warranted given the deteriorating conditions in the country, we are extremely disappointed that the administration chose to not act on redesignation. Plain and simple, the Biden administration made the wrong decision today and missed the opportunity to ensure the safety of thousands of Venezuelans fleeing the Maduro regime and reinforce its leadership and commitment in the Western Hemisphere.

“Last year, recognizing the turmoil in Venezuela, the Biden administration delivered on a campaign promise, authorizing TPS to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans in the United States. It was only four months ago that President Biden also declared a National Emergency with respect to Venezuela because of its deteriorating economic, political and humanitarian crises.

“TPS holders across the country have inspired us and become integral members of the American social and economic fabric. Venezuelans, in particular, helped to keep Florida afloat during its toughest moments as critical members of the labor force. Our nation must not shirk from its responsibility to address the second largest displacement crisis in the world and protect individuals from returning to dangerous conditions that would upend their lives once more.

“With overwhelming public support for TPS for families who are already in the U.S, the Biden administration can make an investment in our economy and the safety of a vital community by expanding TPS for Venezuelans. Doing so can send a powerful message against the Maduro dictatorship that we stand for democracy, freedom and the protection of those who flee persecution. We hope the Biden administration will revisit their decision and act to protect the thousands of Venezuelans whose lives depend on redesignation.”
