Harris Unveils Balanced Vision on Immigration While Trump Threatens “Bloody” Mass Deportations

Voters largely reject Trump’s cruel policy proposals in favor of Harris’s balanced vision

WASHINGTON, DC –  Ahead of tomorrow’s presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris released her immigration policy platform, in which she acknowledges that the “immigration system is broken and needs comprehensive reform that includes strong border security and an earned pathway to citizenship.” The platform stands in stark contrast to the dystopian policy vision laid out by Donald Trump, who this weekend threatened the “bloody” mass deportation of millions of immigrants in the U.S.–a plan Jamelle Bouie says would be “one of the largest forced displacements of people in human history.” When faced with a choice, voters overwhelmingly prefer a path to citizenship (61% support) for undocumented immigrants over mass deportations (39% support).

“Donald Trump was already threatening to use the military to round up and rip American families apart, and now he’s made clear that his mass deportation efforts will necessarily be a ‘bloody story’ of gruesome violence against immigrants,” said Beatriz Lopez, Immigration Hub Deputy Director. “Trump’s dark vision is inhumane, unpopular, and plainly un-American. Harris’s commonsense and balanced approach provides a strong contrast that will surely resonate with critical voters ahead of November.”

Trump’s comments on his immigration plans build on recent remarks from his running mate J.D. Vance, who last week refused to rule out the revival of family separation in a future administration, and reaffirm their commitment to a cruel policy agenda. Since the beginning of 2024, GOP candidates and right-wing groups have already spent over $222 million on anti-immigrant television, streaming, and digital advertisements, bombarding voters with blatant misinformation portraying immigrants as criminals and threats to American society. The ads mirror a larger trend among right-wing media, which saw over 7,000 negative immigration mentions over June and July that received over 38 billion views and an estimated $1.1 billion in publicity.
