Immigration Hub Proudly Supports Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, DC – The Immigration Hub is proud to support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“We embrace Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, and look forward to the day she takes her seat at the Bench,” said Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub. “Judge Jackson has a history of fairness and integrity that transcends politics, and a multi-faceted legal career that will benefit the Court and this country. From her time as a public defender, to her service on the U.S. Sentencing Commission and now as a federal judge, Judge Jackson’s background is varied, broad, and deep. She must be confirmed without delay.”

Importantly, Judge Jackson forced the Trump administration to follow the law in key immigration cases such as Kiakombua v. Wolf. In this case, the government tried to make it harder for people fleeing violence and persecution to clear the first hurdle in the asylum process, before they could even make an application. Judge Jackson found the government’s actions “manifestly inconsistent” with federal law, and ordered an end to them—as well as a second chance for the lawsuit’s plaintiffs. There’s no doubt that Judge Jackson’s decision saved lives.

While some other decisions on immigration-related cases draw pause, the National Immigration Law Center points out that Judge Jackson’s authority was, at the time, bound by higher courts’ precedent. “As a Justice, she would be setting precedent,” NILC writes.

Added Gonzales: “For too long, membership on the nation’s highest court was limited to White, Christian men, making decisions that impact the lives of women, Black people, immigrants, religious minorities, and others. Those days must be past. The U.S. Supreme Court must reflect the character, backgrounds, and diversity of our country. Judge Jackson’s qualifications are unimpeachable, and her confirmation will be another step forward for our country.”
