Immigration Hub Statement on House Vote to Advance Citizenship Proposals Through Budget Reconciliation
Washington, DC — Below is a statement from Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, on the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote today to move forward with a budget reconciliation deal that includes a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, and other essential immigrant workers.
“Today’s House vote to advance President Biden and Democrats’ citizenship proposals through the budget reconciliation process puts America’s immigrant communities the closest they’ve been to a path to citizenship in our country’s recent history.
“There’s no question that Democrats today are fulfilling the will of voters of all stripes. Citizenship for Dreamers, farmworkers, TPS holders and essential workers continues to hold popular, bipartisan support. Despite right-wing, anti-immigrant attacks, both immigrant families and the public at large are ready to write into American history passage of reform that will not only allow people who have been critical to combatting the pandemic an opportunity to become U.S. citizens, but also boost our economic recovery and leave no worker or family behind.
“We strongly encourage both chambers of Congress to move this solution across the finish line without the type of gamesmanship we’ve seen in the past that holds immigrant families hostage for unjust and cruel policies of the past. This is why we strongly support Democrats’ efforts to move this critical issue forward despite continued obstruction and political attacks from Republicans who continue to cater to a shrinking nativist base.”
“As we have repeatedly said, the time is now. Citizenship for undocumented communities can no longer remain an unfulfilled campaign promise. Too many lives and livelihoods hang in the balance. We look forward to seeing this legislation move forward for eventual signature by President Biden in the days and weeks to come.”
