ICYMI: Biden Urged to Embrace Immigrant Protections Ahead of Election [Bloomberg]

 8 MAY 2023

“Advocates are trying to persuade Biden that providing protections for immigrants… will be more compelling to voters than emphasizing enforcement.”

WASHINGTON — As the Biden administration continues to focus on enforcement and deterrence measures in the lead up to the revocation of Title 42, the Immigration Hub released a memo that outlined key actions the Biden Administration can take ahead of the 2024 presidential election to provide protections for immigrant families, including Dreamers and TPS holders already living and working in the United States.

In the face of congressional inaction, President Biden has the opportunity to deliver a path forward for Dreamers and immigrant families, one which would allow them to live and contribute to the country they call home without constant fear of deportation. By putting policy in place to streamline existing legal processes for Dreamers and long-standing immigrant residents to gain legal status, expand and extend TPS for those in the U.S. who can’t safely return to their home countries, and address the backlog for immigrant families, Biden can act on what the majority of voter’s support ahead of the 2024 election cycle and help create a more fair and humane immigration system.

In case you missed it…

  • “Immigrants’ rights advocates are turning their attention to the executive branch and the 2024 election as border security debates boil over on Capitol Hill this week.”

  • “President Joe Biden should use presidential authority to speed up legal options for immigrant “Dreamers” whose temporary status is vulnerable in court, and expand the use of short-term protections for other populations, the influential lobbying and advocacy group Immigration Hub said in a memo obtained by Bloomberg Government.”

  • “Immigration is likely to dominate presidential campaign debates for 2024, as it has in past cycles. Advocates are trying to persuade Biden that providing protections for immigrants while Congress fails to advance any comprehensive immigration legislation will be more compelling to voters than emphasizing enforcement.”

  • “The group’s specific requests include expanded use of “cancellation of removal” and other legal processes to allow more Dreamers and other long-term immigrant residents to apply for legal status and get work permits; redesignating Temporary Protected Status for residents of unstable African and Central American countries; and using immigration parole authority to help mixed-status families.”

  • “Biden is facing opposing pressure from Republicans and fellow Democrats to prioritize enforcement measures and policies to deter border crossings, especially as the pandemic-era restrictions known as Title 42 are set to end this week.”
