ICYMI: Congressional Hispanic Caucus Demands Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia And End To Mass Disappearances

10 APR 2025

Disappeared to a prison in El Salvador nearly one month ago, Garcia is one of many individuals wrongfully targeted by the Trump administration

Washington, D.C. – Nearly a month after his disappearance to a prison in El Salvador, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) held a press conference demanding the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father who was deported despite a court order blocking his removal. CHC Chair Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), alongside Garcia’s family and advocates from CASA, condemned the violation of Garcia’s due process rights—protections the Supreme Court unanimously affirmed must be upheld, even under the Alien Enemies Act. His wife Jennifer, who has not heard from her husband in over 25 days, said the “so-called administrative error has destroyed my family’s happiness and my children’s innocence.”

The lawmakers, who also sent a letter with their demands to the Trump administration today, warned that Kilmar’s disappearance is setting a dangerous precedent. Their concern reflects recent polling showing that 6 in 10 Americans oppose deporting individuals to El Salvador without due process. Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20) cautioned that while the administration may start with those it can paint as “undesirable,” these tactics could quickly expand to legal residents and citizens alike–leaving Rep. Veronica Escobar (TX-16) asking: “How many more innocent people have already been targeted? How many more are to come?”

See excerpts from the letter below:

“We, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, write to express our deep  concern and unequivocal dismay about recent reports of the wrongful deportation of  Mr. Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

“We find your administration’s actions to be wholly unacceptable. Your administration has not only disrupted the lives of his American wife and children— but also undermines the very foundations of our nation’s commitment to justice and  due process. Every individual in our country is guaranteed the right to a fair hearing —a cornerstone of the Constitution and our legal system. By depriving Mr. Abrego  Garcia of this right, the administration has not only inflicted irreparable harm on him but has also set a dangerous precedent that weakens the trust American families  place in our immigration system.

In light of these serious concerns, we demand that your administration ensures all individuals with deportation orders are given a fair day in court and take immediate steps to uphold the United States’ power to return Mr. Abrego Garcia home with his wife and children.
