Washington, D.C. – Today, the Biden administration announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Cameroon for 18 months, through June 7, 2025, due to the “ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary” in-country conditions. This program will allow nearly 10,000 Cameroon nationals residing in the United States as of October 5, 2023 to continue to stay and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation.
In response to the decision, Immigration Hub Executive Director, Kerri Talbot, issued the following statement:
“As armed conflicts persist and dangerous conditions in Cameroon continue to escalate, there is simply no safe return for Cameroonian immigrants at this moment. Deteriorating conditions in Cameroon warrant the protections that TPS offers. The Biden administration is using its authority to ensure Cameroonian nationals in the U.S. can continue to live and work legally without the fear of deportation. We commend the Biden administration for responding to the tireless advocacy of the Cameroonian community and other immigration organizations including the Cameroon Advocacy Network and Haitian Bridge Alliance.
“We continue to encourage President Biden to use every tool at his disposal including TPS to provide lawful status and work permits to immigrants currently in America. Voters support it and the economy is calling for it. With a divided Congress and an obstructionist GOP party, we hope the administration continues to use its authority to expand access to work permits for both newly arrived immigrants and long-term residents.”
