Immigration Hub Applauds Introduction of Bipartisan Bill to Modernize Immigration System

Representatives Salazar (R-FL) and Escobar (D-TX) combine forces to put serious reform proposal before Congress
WASHINGTON – Kerri Talbot, Deputy Director of the Immigration Hub issued the following statement in response to the introduction of a bipartisan proposal to overhaul our nation’s immigration system.
“The last time Congress overhauled our immigration system – in 1986 and 1990 – the internet was not yet a thing and the proliferation of smartphones was a decade off. It’s long overdue for our leaders in Congress to address what all agree is a broken system that only Congress can truly fix.
“That is why we applaud the bipartisan effort by Florida Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar and Texas Democrat Rep. Veronica Escobar to step up as partners on a much-needed bill to bring our outdated immigration system into line with our values and our interests. The bill would put undocumented immigrants on paths to recognition as the Americans they already are, modernize our legal immigration system and reform and resource our asylum and refugee system. While we are still studying the details and reserve our full support until we have completed that process, the direction, the sponsors and the elements inspire confidence.
“We look forward to working with the champions and co-sponsors of this legislation to press Congress to step up and do what only it can do: create immigration laws that work. The fact is that America at its best is a nation that welcomes immigrants and a nation that does so in an orderly, fair and humane manner.”
