Immigration Hub Applauds the Biden Administration’s Decision to Extend and Redesignate TPS for Haiti

6 DEC 2022

Yesterday, the Biden administration announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti.

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, the Biden administration announced the extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. Redesignated to August 3rd, 2024, the program will allow Haitians nationals residing in the United States as of November 6, 2022, to continue to remain and work in the United States.

In response to the announcement, Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“We commend the administration’s decision to redesignate and extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, which will provide safety and security to thousands of Haitians who are unable to return to their home country as a result of the nation’s escalating dangerous conditions. Haiti is in the midst of a humanitarian disaster and extreme political unrest while still grappling with devastating impacts of natural disasters. These conditions warrant immediate administrative action, as Congress intended, to ensure that Haitian nationals currently in the country are not forced to return.

“TPS protections will allow Haitian nationals in the U.S. to keep their families together and live without the fear of deportation. It will also ensure that Haitians, who are already integral members of communities all across the United States, from Florida to Michigan to New York, can continue to build meaningful lives and be a vital part of our nation’s workforce and economy.

“As part of President Biden’s commitment to addressing global migration and strengthening democracies, we encourage the administration to pursue a robust humanitarian parole program for Haitians overseas to create a safe and legal pathway for those fleeing a deteriorating crisis. In addition, we urge the administration to continue to make critical investments in humanitarian aid to improve economic, health care, and security conditions in Haiti. These key investments will help address the root causes that propel Haitians to risk their lives and desperately seek refuge in the United States.”
