Immigration Hub Honors Six Lives Lost On Anniversary of Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

26 MARCH 2025

“He had a good heart. He was a hard worker. He was always worried about his family too. He died but he was fighting for us always,” said the wife of a victim.

Washington, D.C. – One year ago, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship, killing six immigrant workers who were repairing the bridge in the early morning hours. These were fathers, sons, and community members who had spent years contributing to the country’s infrastructure and economy.

As the Trump administration narrows legal pathways and strips humanitarian protections away, their memory underscores what is at stake: a vibrant democracy where anyone, regardless of status, can find refuge and opportunity.

Statement from Beatriz Lopez, Co-Executive Director of the Immigration Hub:

“These six men came to this country seeking safety, dignity, and the chance to contribute. They gave their lives strengthening the foundation of this nation—literally building the bridges that connect us. Honoring them means protecting the legal pathways that allowed them to be here, and defending the democratic values they believed in. Their sacrifice should inspire us not only to remember, but to act—to build a system that values every life and lives up to the promise of justice for all.”
