Immigration Hub Responds To President Biden’s Executive Action on The Border
Today, the Biden administration will announce executive action that will limit the ability of migrants to seek asylum between ports of entry.
WASHINGTON – Today, the Biden administration will announce executive action that will limit the ability of migrants to seek asylum between ports of entry.
In response, Immigration Hub Executive Director Kerri Talbot issued the following statement:
“Executive action to block asylum seekers who arrive between ports of entry is against the law and will likely be stopped by the courts. Asylum law is within the purview of Congress–not the Executive Branch. Unfortunately, Congress has not done its job – it has failed to reform our nation’s immigration laws for decades due to Republican obstructionism.
“As President Biden takes executive action on the border, he also must keep American families together by advancing popular legal pathways for Dreamers and other long-settled undocumented families in the U.S, including immigrant family caregivers, undocumented spouses of American citizens, and workers who have long contributed to the country. Administrative action on behalf of undocumented communities in the U.S. also offers the President a critical opportunity to galvanize key voters in battleground states ahead of November, including Biden’s 2020 coalition of supporters such as independents, youth, Latino, and Black voters. We urge the administration to meet the moment and take swift action to help immigrant and American families.”
Background: Recent polling, conducted by Global Strategy Group (GSG) and BSP Research on behalf of Immigration Hub, found that battleground voters overwhelmingly support President Biden taking action to provide pathways to citizenship and legal status for long-settled undocumented communities. Family caregivers (74% support), spouses of U.S. citizens (73% support), and Dreamers (76% support) see the highest levels of support.
