Immigration Hub Responds to Ruling Allowing The Deportation of Mahmoud Khalil

11 APRIL 2025

Washington, D.C. –  Following today’s ruling in Mahmoud Khalil’s case, which allows for his deportation despite the absence of any criminal charges, the Trump administration also announced that it will end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 10,000 individuals from Afghanistan and Cameroon – putting these individuals, who have already lawfully been living and working in the U.S. at risk of deportation as early as May.

Beatriz Lopez, the Co-Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, released the following statement in reaction:

Today’s ruling in Mahmoud Khalil’s case is an assault on the rights of all Americans and the very foundations of our democracy. It marks an unprecedented and dangerous step towards authoritarianism. From deporting dissenters to stripping legal protections from those lawfully here, this is all part of a larger agenda to disappear and deport as many people as possible through whatever means possible and necessary. Democracy and the American Dream be damned

“If the Trump administration can strip away due process, silence dissent, and erase the rights of those lawfully living in this country, it sends a dangerous message to all Americans that our freedoms are not guaranteed, but rather at the mercy of the political whims of those in power. We must all stand united against these relentless attacks on immigrants and recognize them for what they are: an attack on our democracy itself.”
