WASHINGTON, DC – Today, a working group of Republican lawmakers led by Senators James Lankford (R-OK), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) released their proposal to address migration at the southern border.
The Immigration Hub’s Executive Director, Kerri Talbot, issued a statement in response:
“At a time when we need concrete actions and solutions to address the challenges of global migration, the Senators have offered a redundant set of recommendations that are cruel, impractical, and dead on arrival. Our immigration system needs remedies, not poison pills that would build a wasteful border wall, upend America’s asylum system, detain families with children, and undermine humanitarian parole and other tools to manage migration in an orderly and humane manner.
“In a repeat of H.R. 2, there is nothing new in this proposal that wouldn’t do more harm than good. Congress should resource our asylum system to increase capacity to process asylum claims and reduce the backlog while providing funding to communities receiving asylum seekers. We need to steer clear of slapdash policy changes that could make a bad system worse, and instead effectively fund our immigration and asylum system.”
