Immigration Hub: Trump Lost Because of Immigration, Republicans Should Learn From His Mistakes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Trump is set to deliver remarks at CPAC on Sunday, once again amplifying an anti-immigrant message around myths of a “border surge.” Ahead of Trump’s remarks, Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“While Americans have moved on from Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, Trump hasn’t. The former president still has his foot firmly on the gas, spinning false narratives on President Biden’s approach to the border, which he left in utter ruins and chaos. The Biden administration has been left to pick up the pieces while Trump wails and Republicans echo the hyperboles or sit idly by as legislation to remedy the immigration system moves to the fore without their support.

“Trump was a one-term President in large part because Americans were repulsed by his disgusting vitriol against immigrants and human rights violations at the border. In fact, half of Trump’s supporters who switched to Biden in 2020 cited Trump’s immigration policies as more of a reason to vote against him. Trump’s legacy is cemented in taking children away from their parents, sparking a full-fledged humanitarian crisis at our southern border and committing heinous abuses against immigrants in detention.

“Rather than proposing solutions, congressional Republicans would rather take cues from Stephen Miller on immigration. The American public wants an immigration system rooted in fairness and humanity and they strongly support citizenship for undocumented immigrants who have kept our country afloat amid the pandemic. The GOP must be willing to reject the radical ideologues of their party and work to bring forward solutions to our country’s most pressing issues.”
