WASHINGTON – On Saturday, The New York Times exposed former President Donald Trump’s “extreme expansion” of his immigration agenda should he be re-elected in 2024. His plans include a targeted campaign to “round up” undocumented immigrants in America, detain them in “sprawling” and “huge” camps, and carry out a mass deportation operation regardless of an individual’s time settled in the U.S. Additionally, Trump has promised he would once again attempt to terminate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and humanitarian parole, deny student visas to foreign students involved in pro-Palestine protests, and end birthright citizenship.

In response, the Immigration Hub’s Deputy Director Beatriz Lopez issued the following statement:

“There is no question or argument that Trump is clearly telling the American public that he will use the power of the presidency to hunt down immigrants on U.S. soil and resurrect one of the worst actions our government has ever taken and callously hold hard-working individuals and families in internment camps. This is not normal. There are no both sides to this plan – there is just one conclusion: this is vile and unacceptable.

“Trump’s ideas of who belongs in our nation are cruel and nativist. We know that his vision of the aspiring American is not Brown or Black. We know that he will not fix our immigration system, but instead destroy the pillars of the American Dream. He is playing to a rabid base without any thought to the moral, cultural and economic implications.

“Immigrants in America, regardless of their status, are critical to our communities and economic growth. Many have spent decades in our country, paying taxes and contributing as small business owners and essential workers. They aren’t just part of the American fabric, but integral to our collective success.

“Trump’s plans are far out of touch with the American electorate. Voters, including critical Latino voters, don’t want a repeat of imprisoning and separating families or banning people seeking safety and refuge. Rather, voters have long demanded that Congress offer Dreamers and long-settled immigrant workers and families a path to citizenship. They want our elected leaders to stop scapegoating immigrants and instead provide working families, including immigrants, the tools and opportunities that will grow our economy and strengthen our communities.

“Trump is offering a dark and draconian nation to not just part of our population but to all Americans.”
