Press Briefing: Nevada Leaders and Immigration Experts Call on Sen. Cortez-Masto and Democratic Senators to Stand Up Against Efforts to End Asylum, Deliver Immigration Solutions Voters Demand
WASHINGTON, DC – Nevada leaders and immigration experts will hold a briefing call Thursday, May 19 at 12:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 a.m. PT, to denounce legislative efforts to undermine America’s asylum system by maintaining Title 42.
As Republicans attempt to hold hostage important COVID funding legislation to continue using the border as an electoral wedge issue, the Lankford-Sinema bill stands to block refugees and asylum seekers, primarily Haitians, Central Americans, Venezuelans and other migrants of color, from processing claims at the border for years to come. The implications of the bill would have a detrimental impact on America’s asylum system, sending a dangerous signal to Nevada and the American electorate at large that Democrats are willing to compromise the nation’s values for fear of racially-charged, political attacks.
Senator Cortez-Masto and Democratic leaders have an opportunity to reject the bill and instead deliver on widely supported immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship and support Biden’s border plan with resources. According to a recent Immigration Hub survey, a majority of voters support a fair and orderly process for refugees and those seeking asylum.
