North Carolina Mayors On Trump’s Mass Deportation Agenda: “We Need Leaders Who Unite, Not Divide, Us”

NORTH CAROLINA – As Donald Trump prepares to give remarks in Mint Hill tomorrow, Tar Heel State mayors are voicing their strong opposition to his anti-immigrant agenda, which would “marshal every federal and state power necessary” to detain and deport millions of long-settled undocumented immigrants and tear families apart. Just this week, Trump acknowledged that the unpopularity (39% support) of his mass deportation plans could make it “a lot harder” to carry out such an operation. Rather than aligning himself with the majority of voters who would prefer a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants (61% support), Trump instead blamed the media for its coverage of his cruelty and suggested that separating families would not be “the worst thing in the world.Experts agree that Trump’s mass deportation plans also would wreak havoc on local economies and communities, especially in North Carolina, where immigrants are critical to meeting increased demand for labor in sectors like agriculture and construction.

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin:

“We are a country of immigrants, built by immigrants. There is a place for everyone in our country. People should be welcomed. And the fact is, we also need immigrants to be part of our workforce. The rhetoric around hate and anger related to our immigrant community has no place in our society.”

Durham Mayor Leo Williams:

“Trump’s immigration agenda is a thinly veiled attack on the values that have built this nation. His dangerous policies fuel fear and division while targeting the very people who contribute to our communities and economy. America is better than this, and it’s time we rise against such divisive politics.”

Morrisville Mayor TJ Cawley:

“Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda targets the core of America—our immigrant communities. His mass deportations and increased raids are not only cruel but also harm the economy. This approach isn’t about safety; it’s about spreading fear and division. We need leaders who unite, not divide, us.”
