SCOTUS Decision Pauses Trump Crusade to Deport Dreamers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, ruling that President Trump did not properly terminate DACA, Sergio Gonzales, Deputy Director of the Immigration Hub issued the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision upheld what we know to be true: Trump’s relentless crusade against Dreamers was unlawful and that for hundreds of thousands of Dreamers, the United States is – and always will be – home. This critical ruling comes as the nation reels from police violence against Black communities which has exposed once again the deep and systemic racism and anti-Blackness that flows throughout our country.

“In this moment in history, we should not overlook the valiant contributions Dreamers have made to America’s communities, culture and economy. As the country faces a pandemic, approximately 202,500 Dreamers are working on the frontlines to save lives and keep our essential industries running. Every day, Dreamers remind us they are part of what we aspire to be as a nation.

“This ruling is a huge victory, but this fight is not over. The Court ruled that the process the Administration used to end DACA was illegal, which means the program is still threatened by Trump and Stephen Miller. As if the stakes in the upcoming election couldn’t be higher, this November is now also about DACA and ensuring Dreamers are permanently protected.”

Sara Horta, a DACA recipient living in Washington, DC said:

“This ruling blocks Trump’s attempt to end DACA and unnecessarily place hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients on the pathway to deportation. Despite Trump’s efforts to villainize  and attack immigrants, my community is strong and resilient and we will not go away quietly.

We will not wait around for Trump and Stephen Miller to come up with another misguided plan to terminate DACA or enact other anti-immigration policies. Instead, we will make sure that Donald Trump is a one-term president and Republicans who rubber-stamped his racist agenda are also defeated in November.”
