Sergio Gonzales Announced as New Executive Director of the Immigration Hub
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Immigration Hub announced today that Sergio Gonzales will become the new Executive Director of the organization after serving as Deputy Director since 2018. Gonzales will replace Tyler Moran, who has joined the Biden White House as special assistant to the president for Immigration on the Domestic Policy Council.
“I am truly honored to step into this role with such an exemplary team of people fighting each and every day for an immigration system centered on humanity, justice and opportunity,” said Gonzales. “As we enter a new era of leadership, I’m excited to work with our partners at every level to enact policies that are inclusive and recognize the dignity and value of every person. This starts with Congress swiftly passing legislation to provide citizenship to the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants, including Dreamers, TPS holders and immigrant essential workers who have kept the country afloat during a historic pandemic. After four very long and painful years, it is a more hopeful day for immigrant communities in America. And change can’t come fast enough.”
Prior to joining Immigration Hub, Sergio served as Senior Policy Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris when she represented California in the U.S. Senate. He worked closely with then-Sen. Harris on oversight of the Trump Administration’s immigration policies, including family separation, the decision to end DACA, and expansion of ICE enforcement. Sergio was also Senior Policy Advisor to U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) and helped craft the Gang of Eight’s immigration reform bill in 2013.
Additionally, he led efforts to strengthen diversity and inclusion across the federal government as Deputy Chief of Staff for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management under the Obama White House.
Gonzales’s work in government is complemented by longtime work as a campaign strategist and respected Latino leader. Sergio served as Regional Director for Secretary Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign where he oversaw fourteen states. He was the Colorado Political Director for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and for Sen. Bennet’s race in 2010 where he led Latino programs that resulted in record Latino turnout. Sergio currently sits on the board for Equis Labs, a national Latino research and digital organization working to better understand and reach Latino voters. He began his career as a social caseworker helping teens to emancipate from the foster care system. Sergio is originally from Colorado where he grew up organizing in the Chicano rights movement as grandson to civil rights leader Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales.
