Immigration Hub Statement Against the Continuation of MPP and other Inhumane Trump Immigration Policies

Washington, DC — In a statement today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced its intention to reinstate the Trump-era Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) consistent with a 5th Circuit decision that ordered good-faith steps toward reimplementation. The Trump policy, also known as Remain in Mexico, forced thousands of migrants and refugees to wait in dangerous Mexican border regions as their claims to asylum were being adjudicated in U.S. tent courts. The long wait led to thousands of vulnerable migrants suffering sexual and other violent assault, kidnapping, and in some cases death. Below is a statement from Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub:

“MPP and Title 42 are an affront to the very moral fiber of our country. These policies have real, damaging, and even life-threatening consequences for thousands of migrants who are lawfully seeking asylum and access to our immigration system. They were designed to be cruel, and simply cannot be implemented humanely. The American people want a working immigration system that is orderly, fair and humane, not a continuation of Stephen Miller’s racist and abhorrent policies. We urge the administration to issue a new memo immediately to end MPP and Title 42 once and for all. When lives are on the line, delay is not an option.”
