Washington, D.C. – Reports indicate that the Trump administration is restarting family detention, reviving a widely criticized policy that was ended by President Biden in 2021. Despite years of evidence highlighting the severe psychological and developmental consequences of detention, the administration is once again prioritizing cruelty over humanity in order to realize their mass deportation agenda.
Statement from Kerri Talbot, Co-Executive Director of the Immigration Hub:
“Jailing children and families is not just inhumane—it is an intentional infliction of fear and suffering. Trump’s decision to reopen Dilley is a calculated move to normalize mass family detention and strip vulnerable people of their dignity. Decades of research, including from the U.S. government itself, confirm that family detention causes profound trauma while doing nothing to improve border management or public safety. This is a moral failure, and the administration must be held accountable for reviving a system of state-sponsored harm against children.”
