Failed Supplemental Vote Reveals the GOP’s Misplaced Loyalties on Immigration and Biden’s Opportunity to Offer a New Path

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Senate voted on a bipartisan supplemental funding package that pairs foreign aid with sweeping new border policies. The vote failed as expected, with GOP lawmakers in both chambers aligning themselves with former President Donald Trump, who strongly opposed the bill.

Immigration Hub Executive Director Kerri Talbot released the following statement in response:

“Today, GOP lawmakers demonstrated that their loyalties lie not with the American people, but with Donald J. Trump. This reality is no surprise to those who have witnessed their intransigence over the last four months, continually moving the goal post of their insatiable demands and placing the blame for stagnation at the feet of Democrats. Rather than making an honest attempt to broker solutions, Republicans have chosen to allow Trump’s extremism to poison their sense of duty.

“Even with a proposed bill devoid of any path to legal status for Dreamers or other undocumented immigrants in America, extremist Republicans are not willing to come to the table to negotiate their own priorities in good faith. Democrats must forge a new path to progress. As the nation remains eager for bold immigration solutions, President Biden should lead his party in offering an alternative vision for the system: one that fulfills an overdue promise to Dreamers and other undocumented immigrant communities, that restores order and humanity to the border, and that preserves the founding principles of this nation as a place of safety and opportunity.”
