Extremist GOP Lawmakers Advance Baseless Impeachment Attempt Against Secretary Mayorkas to Senate

Washington, D.C. - Today, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will deliver the House-approved articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate, where the charges are likely to be dismissed. Policy and constitutional experts say the charges are based on policy differences and cannot serve as a basis for impeachment under the Constitution.

In response, Immigration Hub Executive Director Kerri Talbot released the following statement:

“House Republicans have wasted too much valuable time and too many precious resources on a meritless impeachment effort, all to rile up a base that is thirsty for chaos, not order. The charges against Secretary Mayorkas are nothing more than empty, partisan talking points, criticized by legal scholars, who point out that policy disagreements are not valid grounds to pursue impeachment.

“Nevertheless, House Republicans persist with their political gamesmanship. As long as Donald Trump holds the reins, politicking, not governing, on immigration will remain a cornerstone of the Republican party.

“Secretary Mayorkas will easily survive this stunt, but immigrant communities and the nation’s immigration system cannot wait much longer. When Republicans are ready to wrap up their smoke-and-mirror show, Democrats will be waiting at the bargaining table to negotiate real bipartisan immigration reform.”
