Immigration Hub Statement on Vice President Harris Leading Regional Efforts to Address Root Causes of Migration

WASHINGTON— Today, the White House announced that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the administration’s efforts to address the root causes of migration in Mexico and Central America. In response, Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

"We are thrilled that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the administration's work in Mexico and Central America and with partners in the region to take a holistic, humane and bold approach in addressing the root causes of migration. This announcement underscores the seriousness of the Biden-Harris White House to tackle every aspect of our broken immigration system, including addressing this key challenge which was only exacerbated under President Trump.

“Vice President Harris has a keen understanding of immigration from her strong experience working on the issue and with immigrant communities and key stakeholders. As California’s Attorney General, she prosecuted transnational criminal organizations. While in the Senate, she was a well-respected immigration policy leader, playing a central role in investigating Trump's cruel family separation policy as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

“The Vice President brings important values to this work such as compassion, strength and an orientation towards justice rooted in her own professional and personal experience. She understands that a mother does not send her child thousands of miles away lightly, but it is a painful decision driven by terrible circumstances such as violence and natural disasters. The Vice President’s leadership and expertise will be invaluable as we work together to create an immigration system that is fair, humane and well managed."
