Immigration Hub Applauds Announcement on First Family Reunifications

WASHINGTON, DC — Below is a statement from Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, in response to today’s announcement that the Biden administration has begun to reunite families separated under the previous administration.

“Today’s announcement by the Biden-Harris administration on the first set of family reunifications marks a major and welcome milestone in undoing the damage of the last four years. President Trump’s family separation policy was an egregious human rights abuse that will go down as one of the most shameful moments in our nation’s history. While much work remains to be done to reunify more families and address the trauma inflicted on them, today is a day for celebration and hope.

“This news comes as other significant progress has been made on the border. This includes an 80% drop over the past month in the number of children in CBP custody and canceled border wall projects that were paid for with Defense Department funds. We look forward to building a smart, just, and humane immigration system that is consistent with our American values – we know that’s what the American people want, and today’s announcement shows President Biden is delivering.”

The Biden administration announced today it has begun to reunite  families  who were  separated under the prior administration. Four families that were separated at the United States-Mexico border during the previous administration will be reunited in the United States this week.

On Friday, the administration also announced a more than 80 percent drop over the past month in the number of migrant children in Border Patrol custody — down from 5,767 one month ago to 790 last Thursday. The administration also announced Friday it had canceled border wall projects paid for with Defense Department funds.
