Immigration Hub Deputy Director Kerri Talbot On U.S. Supreme Court Decision On MPP

Washington, DC — Late Friday night, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito temporarily blocked a lower court decision to reinstate President Trump’s Remain in Mexico (MPP) program, while the Court contemplates next steps. In response, Immigration Hub’s Deputy Director, Kerri Talbot, released the following statement:

“The Trump Administration’s MPP program was not only cruel and inhumane, it was also unjust — and, the Biden Administration was absolutely correct in putting an end to it. Equally correct was the quick action taken last night by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito to put a stop to an activist lower court’s dangerous decision to reinstate the policy.

“Trump’s MPP put thousands of vulnerable asylum-seekers at risk of extreme violence in camps, with at least 1,500 reported instances of murder, rape, kidnapping, and other violent attacks while they waited in limbo without representation and safety.

“A few activist federal judges in Texas must not be allowed to drive personal politics through the court system by using legally outrageous efforts to attack the President’s agenda, whether on immigration or any other policy.

“The Biden-Harris Administration and Supreme Court must continue to uphold the integrity of our American values — both in the courts and in executing just policies. The stakes are high, with both immediate and dire human consequences as well as long-term and legal ones.”
