Immigration Hub on Fourth Anniversary of El Paso Shooting

WASHINGTON – Four years ago today, a right-wing extremist in El Paso, Texas claimed the lives of 23 people and injured 22 others in what has been described as the “deadliest anti-Latino attack in modern American history.”

Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“Today, as we solemnly mark the fourth anniversary of the tragic shooting in El Paso, our hearts are heavy with the weight of the lives lost and the pain endured by the local community. We stand together in mourning with the people of El Paso as they endure another year without their beloved family members and friends.

“This anniversary is a reminder of the worst consequences driven by the proliferation of white nationalist theories and hateful rhetoric seeking to dehumanize the Latino community. Four years later, it is deeply unsettling to watch as extreme Republicans continue to formalize xenophobia as a cornerstone of their political strategy. But the attacks on our Latino community are sweeping. From infringing on our right to vote, to dismantling affirmative action and reproductive rights, to refusing to pass reasonable gun safety laws that prevent violent attacks like the one in El Paso from occurring – there is a series of GOP efforts to undermine our community’s well-being, economic prosperity, political power, and safety.

“The upcoming 2024 elections carry immense significance for the future of the country. Democracy is on the ballot. Lives are on the ballot. Today, we remember the lives lost in El Paso, and we vow to honor their memories by working tirelessly to stay vigilant and reject the ideologies that breed violence and hatred. Let us come together as a nation to foster understanding, empathy, and unity so that we may never witness another tragedy like this again.”
