Immigration Hub Responds to SCOTUS Decision Allowing the Implementation of Texas SB 4 Anti-Immigrant Law

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Biden administration’s request to pause the implementation of SB 4 while the law is challenged in lower courts. The extreme and anti-immigrant law would authorize state officials to take over the responsibilities of federal immigration authorities and permit them to detain, arrest and deport any individual suspected of crossing the border without authorization.

In response, Executive Director Kerri Talbot issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision from the U.S. Supreme Court is deeply troubling. SB 4 does nothing to address the systemic flaws in our immigration system or enhance security at the border, but rather empowers Texas law enforcement to further eschew federal authority and target vulnerable immigrants and U.S. citizens ‘suspected’ of unauthorized entry. By refusing to block SB 4, the Court is empowering a governor known for xenophobic and divisive policies to continue his assault on immigrant communities in Texas–and to encourage other right-wing actors around the country to do the same. We unequivocally reject SB 4 and stand steadfastly with Texas immigrants and advocates in their commitment to defending the dignity and rights of all individuals.”
