Immigration Hub Statement on President Biden’s Re-Election Announcement

Washington, D.C. – Today, following President Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign announcement, Sergio Gonzales, the Executive Director of the Immigration Hub released the following statement:

“Nearly three years ago when the majority of the American electorate voted to send candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House, millions of families of all walks of life, democracies across the world, and advocates who fought hard against President Trump’s divisive and cruel policies rejoiced at the hope of a better future and a recommitment to America’s fundamental values. Armed with the mandate to reverse Trump’s flawed immigration policies, the Biden-Harris administration set course to restore a broken immigration and asylum system that was gutted by Trump’s relentless efforts to wall off America and inflict as much harm as possible on immigrant communities.

“Since taking office, the Biden-Harris administration has rolled back numerous of Trump’s failed policies such as Title 42, the public charge rule, the Muslim ban, and family separation. Instead of creating chaos and inciting fear, they have reunited families, expanded health care protections for Dreamers, re-designated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitians and extended these protections for Venezuelans, and restored America’s partnerships with our allies in the Western Hemisphere to manage and address the root causes of migration. The Biden-Harris administration has implemented over 400 measures to build a more fair, functional and humane immigration system in line with America’s values and priorities.

“Now ahead of 2024, President Biden can accelerate this work and deliver for America by offering a path forward for immigrant families and workers, including Dreamers and TPS holders, who remain under the threat of deportation.

“The stakes of this election could not be higher, with democracy itself at stake.  Republicans continue efforts to take away rights and protections, including launching an all-out assault on immigrants like their efforts to eliminate the DACA program. The American public has repeatedly made it clear where they stand. They are tired of the political gamesmanship and fear-mongering. Instead, they want a balanced approach to immigration that upholds our nation’s values – one that offers humane border solutions and creates legal pathways for immigrant families who have contributed profoundly to the nation’s communities, culture and economy.

“President Biden has a unique opportunity to deliver what the majority of voters overwhelmingly support: in the absence of congressional action, protection from deportation and a pathway to legal status for immigrant families, including Dreamers, those eligible for TPS, and long-time immigrant workers. By expanding and extending TPS, streamlining legal processes to afford Dreamers and long-standing immigrant families an opportunity to access legal status, and reducing the backlog for mixed-status families, the Biden-Harris administration would not only fulfill a long overdue promise to the American people that recognizes the contributions of immigrant families, but also make a smart and compassionate investment in America’s future and economic success. President Biden has unfinished business – and this is how he can meet the moment and definitively strengthen his legacy on immigration.

“After years of inaction and cruelty, the 2020 election of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris represented renewed hope for millions of immigrant families living and working in this country. With public opinion squarely on his side and the tools at his disposal, we urge President Biden to deliver on this hope and fulfill a mandate of the American electorate to provide a path forward for immigrant families to legally remain, work and continue contributing to the nation they call home.”
