Immigration Hub Urges No Vote on H.R. 2, Dubbed as the House Republicans’ “Child Deportation Act”

Washington, D.C. –  Today, House Republicans plan to vote on H.R. 2, their disastrous anti-immigrant bill that will dismantle our asylum system, result in the deportation of unaccompanied children, undermine the government's partnerships with humanitarian organizations, resume Trump’s ineffective and expensive border wall at the cost of taxpayers and mandate E-Verify, which will not only harm American workers and businesses but also eliminate billions of dollars in government revenue.

This week, a coalition of over 130 national and local organizations urged Members to vote down the legislation. They argue that the bill doubles down on Trump’s failed policies and demonizes immigrant families, including vulnerable children seeking refuge and protection in the United States.

The following is a statement by Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub.

“It is crystal clear that Republicans are more interested in scoring political points with the most extreme part of their base than offering up real solutions to improve our immigration system. In this pursuit, they seek to sow dysfunction – not order.

“Their latest bill, which Democrats’ have aptly named the “Child Deportation Act,” will do nothing to resource our asylum system or manage the border. In fact, it will only create more chaos, gut the asylum system, make our borders less safe, harm workers and the economy, and vilify vulnerable immigrant families and children in search of protection. Closing the door on those seeking refuge and deporting unaccompanied children is not border policy – it’s inhumane and un-American.

“Voters have made it clear that they are tired of the division and xenophobia coming from the Republican Party. Far too many times, they have seen how this extremist and hate-fueled rhetoric has led to deadly and devastating consequences.

“We call on Members of Congress to reject H.R. 2  along with the bigotry and bad faith baked into its text. It is past time for Congress to get to work on real solutions that combine order and generosity as the best way to achieve both.”
