Immigration Hub Urges Senate to Confirm Alejandro Mayorkas as DHS Secretary

WASHINGTON, DC— As the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee meets today to consider the nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas to be Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kerri Talbot, Director of Federal Advocacy of the Immigration Hub issued the following statement:

“Along with many partners in the immigrant rights movement, we wholeheartedly support the nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas to be Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. For many years, Mr. Mayorkas has been involved in developing and implementing pro-immigrant policies, including through the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. As the first Latino and immigrant to lead DHS, Mr. Mayorkas is the right person to meet the urgency of this moment and will lead this complex agency with compassion and empathy.

“For too long, our country’s top immigration officials and even the President have spewed xenophobic rhetoric and villianized immigrants, but that will change with a Biden administration and a Secretary Mayorkas. From day one, the new administration should act quickly to immediately halt the abuses of the Trump presidency. This includes providing protection for Dreamers, those with Temporary Protected Status, and essential immigrant workers.

“We applaud the nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas and urge the Senate to swiftly act on his confirmation.”
