Immigration Hub’s Executive Director Sergio Gonzales Joins the Biden-Harris Campaign as Senior Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris

After a successful run as Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, Gonzales rejoins Team Harris to work for the reelection of Biden-Harris in 2024

Washington, D.C. The Biden-Harris campaign announced that Sergio Gonzales, the Immigration Hub’s Executive Director, will join their team as senior advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris. Gonzales, who previously served as Senior Policy Advisor to then Senator Harris (D-CA) in the Senate, has been tapped once again by the Vice President to help lead her campaign team. Sergio Gonzales is stepping down from his role at the Immigration Hub and a new leadership team at the organization will be announced in the coming days.

In response, the Immigration Hub issued the following statement:

“While we are saddened by Sergio’s departure from the Hub, we are thrilled for his next role as Senior Advisor to the Biden-Harris campaign where he’ll rejoin Vice President Harris and play a key role in the overall effort to re-elect the Biden-Harris ticket.

“This new position builds upon his own personal and professional journey, which includes his strong roots in the Latino community and Colorado and later his rise as a respected leader in the areas of advocacy, civic engagement and public service. He also has been a lifelong advocate for gun safety as a survivor of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.”

“From staffing Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) and then Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) in the halls of Congress, to making sure Latinos and other working Americans made their voices heard at the ballot box in multiple election cycles — Sergio has always led with conviction and an unwavering belief that our country and our leaders must live up to the nation’s promise as a land of opportunity for all. As head of the Immigration Hub, Gonzales has been a stalwart visionary who strategically invested in the development of the next generation of leadership, countered escalating extremism and xenophobia, and guided the Hub with compassion, warmth and kindness.”

“Ensuring that policies are just and reflect the rich diversity of our country has been a hallmark of Sergio’s career in public service. As he takes on his next role and works to build a strong, diverse, and winning coalition for 2024, we have no doubt he will continue to lead with the same commitment, tenacity, and heart.”

“Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden could not have chosen a better person to help ensure Democrats will have another four years to continue to deliver for the people. We have no doubt that Sergio will continue to make his home state of Colorado proud and bolster his family’s contributions to American society, including his grandfather Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales’ enduring legacy as a warrior for civil rights and justice. With so much at stake in 2024 — such as ensuring protections for hardworking immigrants such as Dreamers, addressing gun violence, the right to vote and our reproductive freedoms, and the very heart of our democracy, we are heartened to know that our nation’s future will be strengthened as a result of Sergio’s leadership.”

Sergio Gonzales’s biography:

Sergio previously served as Senior Policy Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris when she represented California in the U.S. Senate. He began his work in the Senate as policy aide to U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO). During the Obama Administration, Sergio led efforts to modernize federal hiring and strengthen diversity and inclusion efforts as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Gonzales’ work in government is complemented by longtime work as a campaign strategist and respected Latino and LGTBQ+ leader. Sergio led Latino engagement for the Biden-Harris transition in 2020. He also served as a Regional Director for Secretary Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign where he oversaw fourteen states. He was the Colorado Political Director for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and Sen. Bennet’s race in 2010, where he led mobilization programs that resulted in record Latino turnout. Sergio recently sat on the board for Equis Labs, a national Latino research and digital organization working to better understand and reach Latino voters. He began his career as a social caseworker helping teens to emancipate from the foster care system.
