ICYMI: New York City Mayor Eric Adams Calls on President Biden to Expand Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nationals of Central America and Other Countries

WASHINGTON – The New York City Mayor Eric Adams, along with a number of Members of Congress from New York – including Representatives Jerrold Nadler and Daniel Goldman – called on the Biden Administration to use their federal authority to redesignate and extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Venezuela, Sudan, South Sudan and Cameroon. They also called on the administration to expand and extend humanitarian parole to asylum seekers.

A recently released battleground poll conducted by Global Strategy Group showed that voters overwhelmingly support (64%) the Biden administration using its TPS authority to help protect immigrant families and workers from deportation to unsafe countries.

In case you missed it…

  • “We're calling the Biden and Harris administration in the United States Department of Homeland Security – they must use all tools that are available to resolve this issue,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “We want to ensure that asylum seekers can start to work immediately. Fortunately [President Biden] can act with a stroke of a pen. The federal government must redesignate and extend Temporary Protected Status for Venezuela, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Sudan, South Sudan, [and] Cameroon.”

  • “The ability to seek asylum is a bedrock principle protected by federal law. Unfortunately, with Republicans now in control of the House, they have made it clear they will not fix this crisis which is growing by the day. In the face of their inaction, I urge President Biden to re-designate TPS for Venezuela and expand humanitarian parole access for asylum seekers so they can get the work authorizations they desperately need to get on their feet and build their lives in the United States,” said U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler.

  • “The Biden administration has the opportunity to expedite pathways to work authorization for new arrivals and our hope is that the administration will continue to be a productive partner as we work to address this crisis and welcome our new neighbors,” said U.S. Representative Dan Goldman.

  • “I join Mayor Adams in urging the Biden administration to provide paths to work authorization for asylum seekers and ensure that all those who are able to work have the ability to do so,” said New York State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal.

  • “I join Mayor Eric Adams in asking President Biden to grant a pathway to work authorization for the tens of thousands of asylum seekers who have fled to New York City," said New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar.

  • “The federal government must step up and prioritize the basic human rights and dignity of asylum seekers by creating accessible paths to work authorization,” said New York City Councilmember Erik Bottcher.

  • “Thousands of recently arrived New Yorkers, unable to return to their home countries due to dangerous and unsafe circumstances, can be protected through TPS and humanitarian parole,” said Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Manuel Castro.
