The Immigration Hub Applauds Passage of the Reconciliation Package with Immigration Provisions

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Democratic House members passed the Build Back Better Act including an immigration permit program that would allow 7 million undocumented immigrants to live and work in the United States without fear of deportation. The provisions respond to overwhelming voter support for lasting protections for undocumented immigrants. Poll after poll has shown that over 70% of voters support work permits and protection from deportation for Dreamers and undocumented immigrants.

In response, Immigration Hub’s Executive Director Sergio Gonzales released the following statement:

“Every day, undocumented immigrants who have lived in the country for years wake up to go to work and help keep our country going. They harvest our crops, care for our loved ones, and run small businesses that support local economies. And every day, these same workers must live in constant fear of deportation and losing their home and families. The Build Back Better Act passed out of the House today, under Speaker Pelosi’s leadership, would transform millions of lives by providing long overdue protections from deportation for undocumented communities.

“We thank all of our congressional leaders, President Biden and Vice President Harris who have fought to ensure the inclusion of critical immigration reforms in the Build Back Better Act, and have brought us closer than ever to the finish line of passing real protections for immigrant communities.

“Democrats must govern and deliver on the promises that gave them the majority. The immigration permit program is not just vital for our economic recovery and an effort to redress years of harm created by an outdated and harmful immigration system, but a popular solution that will advance a thriving society and future.”

“Immigration, civil rights and labor movements, and directly impacted persons, along with members of Congress, have worked arduously to reach this point, where we can ensure long-overdue protections for immigrants, including many Dreamers, TPS-holders, essential workers and farm workers. This has been a fight for decades, and now the Senate holds the power to seal the deal. We urge Democratic Senators to vote ‘yes’ on the Build Back Better bill and finally give the American people the solutions they have been promised for years.”
