Immigration Hub Statement in Support of National Actions for Black Migrants

Washington, DC — This week marks the National Week of Action for Black Migrants, driven by the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), and today, Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) is also leading a Day of Action for Black Migrants. Black leaders, organizers, and allies across the U.S. are joining forces and demanding action that directly addresses racial injustice in the nation’s immigration system, including ending Title 42, ending expulsions and deportations, and providing humanitarian parole for Black asylum seekers. Below is a statement in solidarity from Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub:

“We need to do better as a country to center the rights and demands of Black communities and to move beyond rhetoric to meaningful action that addresses the systemic racial inequities in immigration and across our society. This week, and every week, should serve as an urgent call to action to recognize and commit to addressing the rights of Black immigrants, who face discrimination and unique roadblocks within our immigration system. Many Black migrants arrive at our southern border in need of refuge. They hail from different regions, including the Caribbean and Africa, and represent a diversity of cultures, languages, and experiences. What unites them with all other migrants is the refuge they seek in the promise of America and their equal right to access our asylum and immigration processes and resources.

“Restoring and protecting our asylum system, including ending deportations to Haiti and terminating Title 42, are just a few examples of decisive action that the Biden Administration should take that would help protect Black migrants. Ultimately, a just and humane immigration system depends on tackling racism head-on, and doing so by working towards solutions hand in hand with Black immigrant organizations and their communities.”
