Immigration Hub: Statement on Minority Leader McCarthy's Visit to the Southern Border

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ahead of GOP Leader McCarthy’s remarks at the southern border, Sergio Gonzales, Executive Director of the Immigration Hub, issued the following statement:

“Let’s call Congressman McCarthy’s visit to the border what it is: a political stunt.

“It’s no surprise that Rep. McCarthy and other Republicans are staging a tour of the southern border just days after President Biden signed the highly popular American Rescue Plan. Democrats delivered, and Republicans are scrambling to distract from their failures to offer any solution to the public health and economic crisis their constituents are confronting. McCarthy and Republicans have had countless opportunities to address the pandemic, health care, economy and immigration, among a myriad of kitchen-table issues. And yet, here they go again: creating fear over a broken immigration system that was chaotically and cruelly exacerbated during the Trump administration.

“President Biden has stepped up to the plate to clean up the mess left behind with bold and transformative plans - from the American Rescue Plan that will lift millions out of poverty to a commonsense, humane approach to our immigration system that promises safe and legal channels to enter our country, smart border management, and a new path to citizenship. Republicans would rather spin a tale of chaos than work with President Biden and Democrats to deliver bipartisan solutions.

“We’re done with the divide and distract ‘caravan’ strategy of the past; it’s an old trope and the punditry should be wiser than to take the bait. Republicans can choose to continue to politicize this issue or they can work with Democrats on actually fixing it. So far, they’ve continued to choose Donald Trump over what’s best for America.”
