Trump Puts Immigrant Youth at Risk of Deportation by Attacking DACA

WASHINGTON, DC— In response to the Trump Administration’s new memo outlining their plans to end new applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and limit renewals of status to one year, Sergio Gonzales, Deputy Director of the Immigration Hub issued the following statement:

“The Trump administration is now doubling down on their plan to end DACA and put young immigrants at risk of deportation. By denying more than 300,000 young people the ability to apply for DACA, Trump is circumventing the Supreme Court’s order allowing new applications to proceed and continuing to threaten these young people and their families. Trump should have immediately processed all new DACA applications.

As coronavirus continues to spiral out of control, this president is more interested in continuing to terrorize Dreamers. He has repeatedly used the issue to play to his shrinking base while attempting to fool the public with empty overtures. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans, such as Cory Gardner and Martha McSally, are sitting on the sidelines of another Trump inflicted disaster instead of immediately taking up the Dream and Promise Act to permanently grant relief to Dreamers.

The memo issued today is a continuation of the war that this administration has waged against Dreamers for the past four years. While support for Dreamers among the American public is at an all-time high, the Trump administration remains undeterred in its efforts to deport Dreamers. Enough is enough. Voters, especially Latinos and moderates key to victory in battleground states, are tired of the chaos and the games being played with these lives. Trump and Republicans will pay the price at the ballot box in November if they continue down this course.”
