Ahead of Trump Taking Office, Immigration Hub Reaffirms Its Commitment to Protecting American Families

Washington, D.C – As the nation prepares for Donald Trump to be sworn in for his second term as president, immigration advocacy groups are raising the alarm about the incoming administration’s anticipated assault on immigrant communities, including mass detention and deportations. Advocates and experts warn that Trump’s agenda threatens to dismantle critical immigration protections, harm millions of families and communities across the nation, and undermine public sentiment: polling consistently shows that the majority of Americans support balanced, humane immigration solutions, including pathways to citizenship and smart border security measures.

Statement from Kerri Talbot, Co-Executive Director of the Immigration Hub:

“As Donald Trump is sworn in next Monday, we must remember that his election is not a mandate for cruelty. The majority of Americans support pragmatic, balanced solutions on immigration—solutions that include smart border security and pathways to citizenship for the millions of long-settled undocumented individuals who live and work in this country, contributing to our economic vitality and enriching our communities.

Still, we know what Trump has promised. His administration is preparing a massive deportation operation targeting all immigrants, regardless of their status or deep ties to this country. Schools, hospitals and community centers will not be off limits. During his first term, Trump enacted over 470 administrative changes that decimated the immigration system—slashing humanitarian protections, restricting asylum access, and cutting legal immigration by nearly half. These cruel policies harmed families, stifled economic and labor force growth, and resulted in one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in our nation’s history: children torn from their parents’ arms and locked in cages. 

While we hope for the best, we take Trump at his word. We are prepared to fight back against any cruel or violent attacks on immigrant communities in the U.S. or those fleeing to this country in search of safety and refuge. Together with immigrants and advocacy groups, we will continue to champion the balanced, humane immigration solutions that Americans overwhelmingly support. We will stand up for policies that embody fairness, compassion, and the shared values that make this country a beacon of hope and opportunity for all.”
