Immigration Hub Responds to “Baseless” GOP Effort to Impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Today, the House Homeland Security Committee will hold an impeachment hearing against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

WASHINGTON –Today, the House Homeland Security Committee will hold an impeachment hearing against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. While Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) has accused Mayorkas of failing to enforce the nation’s existing immigration laws, policy and constitutional experts say the charges are based on policy differences and cannot serve as a basis for impeachment.

Immigration Hub Executive Director Kerri Talbot issued the following statement in response:

“Once again, GOP lawmakers are resorting to political theater in order to distract from their utter lack of solutions for the immigration system. It goes without saying that the charges against Secretary Mayorkas are completely baseless and rely on false claims about the Secretary’s intentions. Based on current law, you can’t impeach over policy disagreements.

The truth is that Republicans have no serious policy proposals beyond the cruelties stolen from Donald Trump and Stephen Miller’s handbook. Rather than working with Democrats to negotiate orderly and humane solutions that resource the border and strengthen local communities, which the majority of voters support, Republicans are content to ignore the issue so that they can feature the resulting chaos in their next campaign ad.”
