Senate Moves Forward With Dangerous Budget Resolution Prioritizing Mass Deportations Over Working Families

21 FEBRUARY 2025

Budget would force Americans to accept a devastating trade-off: fewer resources for education, children, and working families in exchange for raids in schools, churches, and hospitals and the military in their neighborhoods.

Washington, D.C. – Today, the GOP-controlled Senate voted to move forward with a budget that prioritizes mass deportations over essential support for American families. Instead of funding healthcare, food assistance, and programs that help children and seniors, Trump and Senate Republicans are demanding up to $350 billion to expand detention, conduct mass raids, and militarize communities.

See the Immigration Hub’s latest memo breaking down the budget and highlighting the balanced solutions voters prefer.

Statement from Kerri Talbot, Co-Executive Director of the Immigration Hub:

“Today, the Senate voted to move forward toward a budget that will gut essential programs—like healthcare and food assistance—for working families, seniors, and children to fund Trump’s mass deportation machine. The $350 billion mass deportation plan will rip parents from their kids, detain longtime residents indefinitely, and hand taxpayer dollars to private prisons and anti-immigrant enforcement in the states. This is not just an attack on immigrants—it’s an assault on American families and communities. Lawmakers must reject this cruel, wasteful spending and instead invest in real solutions that strengthen our economy and keep families together. Senators must vote no.”

Background on Trump’s $350 Billion Budget:

Turbocharged Deportation Force – The bill could double ICE’s budget, giving the agency unprecedented resources to ramp up mass removals, detention, and expand enforcement across the country–even as efforts have already targeted parents, veterans, and school children. Congress will be signing a blank check to give ICE added capacity to meet arbitrary quotas. The bill would add thousands of new ICE agents to conduct more raids, workplace arrests, and indiscriminate enforcement sweeps.

Indefinite Detention and Kickbacks to Private Prisons – Trump’s plan could fund over 60,000 new detention beds, ensuring indefinite detention for immigrants—including families and longtime residents—at taxpayer expense. This budget could fund opening new mass detention facilities, using military bases like Guantánamo Bay, and contracting with local governments and private prison corporations.

Multi-Billion Dollar Border Wall Slush Fund – Despite past failures, Trump is demanding billions in new funding for border wall construction, diverting resources from real immigration solutions.

Funding Rogue Immigration Enforcement – The bill includes a multi-billion-dollar payout to states like Texas and Florida to fund shadow immigration enforcement efforts like Governor Abbot’s detention camps and Governor DeSantis’ immigrant bounty-hunting program, setting a dangerous precedent for states to carry out Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.
